Gray Purdue Solicitors, is a well-established firm which has many years of
experience in dealing with all manner of disputes. From our experience with
family matters a void was found for those who wished to find a fair solution
to their problems without necessarily having recourse to the courts. Mediation
is a sensible and practical way of settling disputes without resorting to the
traditional use of solicitors and courts. Mediation is a process which seeks
to assist people who have decided to separate or divorce to reach mutually acceptable
proposals in relation to their children and financial arrangements, by negotiation
and discussion.
Impartial Legal Advice
The mediator is an impartial person and will help you to determine what issues
you need to resolve and then to help you to arrive at a sensible and practical
solution which feels “fair” for both of you.
Often people consult their own solicitors during the mediation process, so
that they can discuss the proposals that have been made and feel properly informed
and at ease during the mediation negotiations.

Benefits from Mediation
At the end of the mediation, you will take your mutually acceptable proposals
to your solicitors who will then be able to convert these into the relevant
agreements or court orders as necessary. Many people find mediation is particularly
beneficial to resolve the issues around children.
Many people find the benefits from mediation are to reduce tension and hostility;
enable decisions to be made on an informed basis and quickly; to assist the
communication and cooperation process; to explore and examine options; to appreciate
and consider the other’s needs and to save legal costs.
Mediation Process
The mediation process often takes four to five sessions, the sessions are often
approximately 1½ hours in length. Although you will have to pay for the
individual mediator, as a general rule, using the mediation process, albeit
in tandem with solicitors, can be more cost-effective than using solely solicitors
and the courts.
Claire Webb of Gray Purdue is qualified as a mediator through an organisation
known as Resolution First for Family Law. The majority of Resolution mediators
are practising family solicitors and this is the case with Claire.
By seeking the assistance of a Resolution mediator, you will benefit from the
fact that Claire also has in depth knowledge of the law. Claire usually mediates
alone but can, if you prefer, mediate in tandem with another mediator. This
can be helpful when discussing very emotive issues or if your matter is particularly
complicated.
Most people who have been through the mediation process have felt that mediation
empowers them and enables them to reach agreement that they feel comfortable
with for the future.
